Many of the big U.S. template suppliers build their Squarespace website templates in Canva, which means you often need to pay for an additional Canva membership to edit your new template. We believe Squarespace templates should be built on Squarespace, not on another platform. For many new, unsuspecting users it’s an unpleasant surprise after paying around USD 300 that the template they’ve bought isn’t actually a native Squarespace website and that they must have a Canva membership to use it, adding extra recurring cost and unnecessary complexity.

We design all of our Squarespace website templates directly on the Squarespace platform. It’s important to us that the template you buy from us works exactly as you’d expect as soon as we load it into your Squarespace account. You shouldn’t be forced to rely on Canva or pay for a separate subscription just to make your Squarespace website function properly.

‍ ‍We consider this practice misleading. Yes, many of the templates on the big U.S. template sites are visually attractive, but the Squarespace user searching for a new template will be disappointed to discover that what they paid for wasn’t actually built on Squarespace, and that additional software is required because the design was created in Canva. This leaves customers facing extra steps, unexpected costs, and a product that doesn’t integrate smoothly with the platform they intended to use.

We want to protect our lovely U.K. customers from being duped — USD 200–300 is a significant amount to spend on a so‑called Squarespace template that wasn’t actually built on the Squarespace platform. A few reputable U.S. template providers do build directly on Squarespace, but many of the larger, flashier offerings are created in Canva and presented as if they were true Squarespace products.
