How to transfer a domain from one Squarespace website to another Squarespace website
Transferring a domain between two Squarespace websites you own involves several specific steps. Follow this guide to complete the process smoothly:
Step 1: Prepare the Domain for Transfer on the Source Site
Log in to the Squarespace account that currently manages the domain.
Go to Settings > Domains.
Select the domain you want to transfer.
Check that the domain is eligible for transfer:
The domain must have been registered or transferred more than 60 days ago.
The domain must not be expired or in redemption.
Turn off Domain Lock to unlock the domain for transfer.
Retrieve the Authorisation Code (EPP Code) if applicable (mainly for transferring domains out of Squarespace, but good to have ready).
Step 2: Remove the Domain from the Source Site
Removing the domain from the original site releases it for connection to the new site:
In Settings > Domains, look for the option to Remove Domain or Disconnect Domain.
Confirm the removal.
Step 3: Add the Domain to the Target Squarespace Site
Log in to the Squarespace account for the new site.
Navigate to Settings > Domains > Use a Domain I Own.
Enter your domain name.
Choose Transfer to Squarespace if you want Squarespace to become the domain registrar. Alternatively, choose Connect Domain if you want to keep the current registrar (Squarespace or others).
If transferring, follow the prompts and enter the Authorisation Code when requested.
Squarespace will guide you through verifying the domain ownership and completing the transfer.
Step 4: Confirm and Finalise
The transfer process may take a few hours to several days depending on domain extensions.
You will receive confirmation emails about the transfer status.
Once transferred, update the DNS settings if necessary to ensure the domain is properly connected to your new Squarespace website.
Important Notes:
If your domain is registered with Squarespace, transfers out require unlocking the domain and obtaining the authorisation code.
If you only want to point the domain to another Squarespace site without transferring registrar control, consider connecting the domain via DNS instead of transferring.
Always back up any important site data or email settings associated with your domain before starting the transfer.
Following these steps will allow you to smoothly move a domain from one Squarespace website to another.
