Squarespace Website Experts. How big should my image files be for a Squarespace website.

Image sizes are important. If your image is too large your page will load slowly. Google doesn’t like slow loading websites. No matter how amazing your website is Google will rank you lower than your competitor with a faster loading website.

Videos loaded into you page will also slow up your page loading. Try and upload your videos to YouTube or Vimeo and bring the links across to your video block.

For a Squarespace website, image files should generally be between 100 KB and 500 KB to ensure fast loading times while maintaining quality.

Most image software apps like Photoshop allow you to ‘save for web’ which optimises an image to show on website without losing any quality. Your phone will also have a setting in your photos app to save for a webpage.

  • Dimensions: Aim for image widths of 1500 to 2500 pixels for full-width banners or headers. For smaller images, such as thumbnails or inline photos, 800 to 1200 pixels wide is usually sufficient.

  • File formats: Use JPEG for photographs and PNG for images with transparency or simpler graphics.

  • Compression: Optimise images with compression tools to reduce file size without significant quality loss.

  • Aspect ratio: Maintain consistent aspect ratios across similar images for a cohesive look and responsive design.

Following these guidelines helps create a visually appealing site that loads quickly, improving user experience and SEO.
